Beginner Cigar - Turn Bad Experience to Great

8th Nov 2021

Hi, and welcome to another episode of Mondays with Mardos. I'm Gerard. And I have a question for you. Did you have a horrible experience the first time you smoked a cigar? Well, this week I have a couple tips that I'm going to share with you, what I did the first time I smoked a cigar that went from terrible to great. But before I get going, I need you to click on the subscribe button, click on the bell to be notified every single week of new episodes on Mondays with Mardos.

All right. So the first time I smoked a cigar, it was with my father. And we were in the backyard and I was 19 years old. And this was around the mid 1990s. And the first couple puffs definitely were not very enjoyable. I was wondering, "What's the point?" My father had just got into the industry and the business, so he wanted to share with me what he was doing as a new business. And when I told him that I'm not really enjoying it, he told me to hold off. He went into the kitchen and he brought out a large bowl of cut up watermelon. And he suggested that I take a few bites of watermelon in between puffs, if I wanted to continue trying to smoke the cigar. And let me tell you that definitely helped out a lot. It cooled down my pallet. Another tip that he gave me was maybe to slow down my puffing because I was hot boxing the cigar.

So if you have had a cigar for your first time, and it was not a very good experience, one of the tips that I have is try to find a buddy system. And what I mean by that, go to a cigar lounge and see if you can make a friend within the lounge, somebody that has been smoking a while. And be transparent, say, "I'm very new to cigars. I could use some tips and tricks." Or just open up a conversation, and become a friendly type of a person, and segue way it where you're into, letting them know you're very new to smoking cigars.

So one other tip that I can give you is definitely buy a very mild cigar. Ask your tobacconist for something very mild. Let them know it's your first time, or it's your second time and you want to experience it again, 'cause the first time was really horrible. So, the more transparent you are, the more help you're going to get. Also, grab something cold to drink so you can always refresh your pallet. Slow down your puffing.

And then if you do have a buddy's system going, the reason why I bring that up is because while you're smoking, and if they're interested in walking you through the experience, they can ask you some questions. What are you experiencing? So if you're saying that it's just a very hot smoke, first thing, let's take a look at the brand. Is it a brand that is not a mild cigar? Maybe it's too strong of a cigar. So, that would be a point where you need to make a switch. Number two, are you puffing on it too fast? Number three, what are you drinking? Because a lot of times drinks with a lot of fat content, meaning like cafe lattes, or mochachinos, have a lot of fat content that coats the inside of your mouth and you really don't get to taste the cigar. What you get to experience is the heat and the toast of the cigar. So, therefore, that's going to rub a lot of flavor of the cigar. So, you may want to stay away from those type of drinks.

Anyways, let me know in the comments what you did as an experience that you went through after you had your first cigar, you didn't enjoy it. So your second time, third time, what did you do to enhance your cigar smoking and become an actual enthusiast?
