Beginner Cigar Guide - Cigar Basics 101

23rd Aug 2021

Hi, and welcome to another episode of Mondays with Mardo's, I'm Gerard. On this week's beginner cigar guide, we're going to talk about basic cigar 101. But before I get going, I want you click on that subscribe button, click on the bell to be notified, every single week of new episodes of Mondays with Mardo's.

All right, so this week's basic cigar 101. We're going to go over cutting a cigar, lighting it, how to smoke it, and how to ash and also put out the cigar. So right now, I'm going to cut the cigar. One of the biggest suggestion I would have for a beginner is just get a simple cutter. Or if you go to a cigar lounge and you're wondering what cutter to use, just use a regular cutter. Do yourself favor, don't get fancy on it. Now here's one of the biggest tips. If you look at a cigar and it's round, or if it's box breasts, one of the ways to look for a guide is the cap. The cap will always have a little line right there. You can take the cutter, excuse me. You can take the cutter, and then line up with that line. It doesn't have to be perfect, just within the vicinity of that line. See, right there. I have a perfect cut, and now we're going to be ready to light the cigar.

All right. So when it comes to lighting the cigar, inspect your lighter. And what I mean by that, is it a single, dual, triple, quadruple torch? Yes, those things do exist. You want to make sure you give it a test. Is the flame really high? Is it really low? So therefore, you can have this look like a pro. So this is a single flame. The flame is pretty good. So therefore I'm going to go ahead, I'm going to toast the foot of the cigar. I want to make sure that I don't bring the flame too close. As I'm doing it, I just give it a little look. As you can see, I get a little bit of the torching going on. The red cherry. I get a nice little toast, and I want to make sure the whole entire cigar is being lit.

And the way to know if you're doing it too much or too little, here's a little tip, is you take it and you blow into it. And there you can see what area has not been lit. And you can focus on that as you relight the cigar, giving it a little circle of motion. You can go clockwise, counter clockwise, and it looks pretty good. Give it a puff. Now I look like a pro. All right. So when it comes to smoking a cigar, we're going to keep it very, very simple. Because, it is. All you got to do is just puff, like this, voila. Now, if you want to grab yourself a drink, go ahead and do so. Other than that, we're going to go on to how to put out a cigar.

All right. So when it comes to ashing your cigar, we're just going to keep it very simple. There's no need to build a very long ash. I know on social media, on Instagram, there's pictures of people building long ashes. It looks cool. But the worst thing is, if that thing falls in your lap, it's just going to make a mess and it's just inconvenient. So, whenever I build an ash, I simply just take the cigar and I tap it and I give it a nice little roll. So therefore, the whole entire ash comes off the cigar. And I just keep it as simple as that. Now, when it comes to putting out the cigar, there is no need for you to be smashing the cigar at the middle of the asher. You can basically just place it, just like this. It will be burning out, and eventually, it goes out all on its own.

So that's basically it when it comes to cigar basics 101. Let me know in the comments, what are some of the basics, comments, or advice that you have for our viewers.
