Sobremesa Brulee Wagashi Prensado

There’s a new 6 x 50 toro version of the Sobremesa Brûlée Blue. It’s called the Sobremesa Brûlée Wagashi. Steve Saka, founder of Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust, said that Wagashi is a tweaked version of the standard Brûlée Blue, which debuted in a 6 1/4 x 46 grand corona vitola in 2020. The Wagashi uses an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper over a Mexican San Andrés negro binder and fillers from Nicaragua. Unlike the original cigar, Wagashi is trunk-pressed.

This is not the first time there’s been a Brûlée Blue in a toro vitola, though it is the first time the cigar measures 6 x 50. Follow debates about whether the Brûlée Blue has a sweetened cap—Saka says it does not—Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust released the Brûlée Blue STFU!!! Sampler, which contained five 6 x 52 toros ranging from a regular Brûlée Blue to one with a double sweetened cap.

Wagashi is a category of Japanese dessert; the best-known example in the Western world is probably mochi.

“I have been tinkering with a larger format of my Sobremesa Brulée Blue liga for a couple of years on and off,” said Steve Saka, founder of Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust, in a press release when the cigar was announced in April. “My original intent was to craft a ’Big Blue,’ but when the opportunity arose to create something special for Dojo, it refocused my efforts, as the Brulée blend is one of Sensei’s favorites. Trunk pressing this liga proved to be quite a challenge, not only due to bruising and splitting of the shade wrappers, but how it impacted the flavor and burn.”
