La Aurora Expanding Hors d'Age Line for 2026
La Aurora Adds a Lancero to Hors d'Age for 2026
La Aurora is expanding one of its most serious releases, and the new size is the whole story. The Hors d'Age 2025 is shipping in late October 2026, and for the first time it comes in a 6 7/8 x 40 Lancero alongside the established Toro. Same blend. Same tobaccos, every one of them aged at least 12 years. Only the shape changes. For anyone who wants to understand how much a vitola can alter a cigar, this is about as clean an experiment as the industry ever hands you.

At a glance
The key facts first:
- New 6 7/8 x 40 Lancero joins the existing 5 3/4 x 54 Toro. Same blend in both.
- Every tobacco is aged at least 12 years.
- Wrapper and binder: Ecuadorian Sumatra. Filler: Colombia, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua.
- Rolled in 2025, shipping late October 2026. The Lancero carries green branding accents.
- Very limited: 700 boxes of Toro, only 500 boxes of Lancero.
What "Hors d'Age" Actually Means
The name isn't a cigar invention. Hors d'Age is a French cognac designation that translates to "beyond age." In cognac, it's applied to bottles so old that the usual age classifications stop being useful. It's the top shelf.
La Aurora borrowed the term deliberately, and it earns it. Every tobacco in this blend has been aged a minimum of 12 years. The company describes the whole arc, from seed to the cigar reaching you, as a 12-year cycle, with the finished cigars taking extra time in the aging room on top of that. When you see a name lifted from cognac's highest tier, that's the standard being claimed.
Why the Lancero Is the News
Let's be precise, because this is the part people get wrong with line extensions. The Lancero is not a new blend. It uses exactly the same tobaccos as the Toro, aged exactly as long. Nothing in the recipe changed.
What changed is the ring gauge, and that matters more than it sounds. A Lancero at 40 ring is slender, which means far less filler sits inside relative to the amount of wrapper wrapped around it. On a 54-ring Toro, the filler does most of the talking. On a 40, the Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper gets a much bigger voice. That's the point of putting this blend into a Lancero: to let a 12-year-aged wrapper come forward. Our guide on whether ring gauge matters explains that relationship in more depth.

2025 Cigars, 2026 Release
One detail that confuses people every year: this is the Hors d'Age 2025, but it ships in late October 2026. The year in the name refers to when the cigars were rolled, not when you can buy them.
That gap is the point. These cigars sat after they were made, on top of tobacco that was already more than a decade old. For a release built entirely around time, releasing it a year after rolling is consistent rather than odd.
Only 500 Boxes of the Lancero
Here are the numbers that will decide whether you get one. La Aurora is making 700 boxes of the Toro and just 500 boxes of the Lancero, 15 cigars per box either way. That puts the Lancero at 7,500 cigars for the world.
It's also the more affordable of the two. The Lancero runs $25 a cigar against $31.50 for the Toro, which makes the thinner format the cheaper way into a 12-year-aged blend, even though fewer of them exist.
Manuel Inoa's Private Favorite
There's a nice human detail behind this release. Master blender Manuel Inoa has said he's smoked the Hors d'Age in Lancero form every year, and that he's excited to finally put it in front of U.S. consumers.
That carries some weight. Inoa has more than 35 years in the business. He joined La Aurora to run the factory and ended up as its master blender, production manager, and brand ambassador. When the person who builds the blend tells you the Lancero is the version he keeps for himself, that's a better recommendation than any marketing line. It's also worth remembering who's saying it: La Aurora was founded in 1903 and is the oldest premium cigar maker in the Dominican Republic.
The Real Opportunity: Smoke Both
If you can get them, buy one of each. You rarely get to run this test cleanly. Identical tobacco, identical aging, two shapes, side by side. Smoke the Toro and the Lancero in the same week and you'll learn more about what ring gauge does to a blend than any article can teach you, this one included.
That's the enthusiast case for this release. Not scarcity, not the price tag, but a genuine chance to taste a variable in isolation.

The Bottom Line
The Hors d'Age Lancero isn't a line extension for the sake of one. It takes a blend where every leaf has sat for over a decade and puts it in the one shape that pushes the wrapper to the front. Add a name borrowed from cognac's highest designation, a master blender who smokes this version himself, and only 500 boxes, and you have a release worth planning around. If you only get one, the Lancero is both the cheaper and the rarer half. For more on why time matters this much, read our guide on how to age your cigars.
