HVC's First Lancero Has Finally Arrived

After years of making some of the most respected Nicaraguan boutique cigars out there, HVC has never once made a lancero. That changed on September 24. The HVC 500 Years Lancero Only Legends is the brand's first, and for anyone who follows this house, that alone is news. Then you see the production number: 5,000 cigars. Total. Here's why this one is worth paying attention to.

Why a Lancero Is a Big Deal

If you've never gone down the lancero road, here's the short version of why experienced smokers chase them. A lancero is long and thin. At 38 ring gauge, there is far less filler inside relative to the amount of wrapper surrounding it. That shifts the ratio. On a 60-ring-gauge cigar the filler does most of the talking. On a 38, the wrapper carries much more weight.

That's why a lancero can make a blend you already know feel like a different cigar. Same tobacco, different proportions. It's also a harder format to roll well and a harder one to sell, which is exactly why plenty of brands skip it. If ring gauge is new territory for you, our guide on whether ring gauge matters covers the idea in more depth.

A Familiar Blend in Unfamiliar Proportions

HVC didn't build something new from scratch here, and that's the point. It took the established 500 Years blend and put it into a traditional lancero. The recipe is entirely Nicaraguan: a Corojo '99 Jalapa wrapper over a Jalapa binder, with Criollo '98 and Corojo '99 in the filler. It's finished with a flagtail cap, the little twisted pigtail that has become a lancero signature.

We haven't smoked this one yet, so we're not going to tell you what it tastes like. What we can tell you is that taking a known blend into a 38 ring gauge is a genuine change in how that tobacco gets presented. That's the reason to be curious.

Where the 500 Years Line Comes From

A little history helps here. Reinier Lorenzo launched the 500 Years line in 2019 to mark the 500th anniversary of the founding of Havana. That gave the line a specific meaning from day one rather than a name picked off a shelf. Seven years later, the Only Legends Lancero extends that idea into a format the line has never worn. For a brand with Cuban roots making cigars in Nicaragua, choosing the lancero, arguably the most classically Cuban of shapes, is a fitting way to carry that concept forward.

    5,000 Cigars, and That's It

Let's talk numbers, because they're the other half of the story. HVC made 500 boxes of 10 for 2026. That is 5,000 cigars for the entire release. To put that in perspective, plenty of "limited" releases run ten times that. This is not a new size quietly joining the regular catalog. HVC has said it intends the lancero to be an annual limited-production release, so the plan is for it to return each year rather than sit on shelves year round.

Worth noting: this was originally expected around Father's Day 2026. It got delayed, which is why it landed in late September instead. Sometimes that's just how small-batch production goes.

    The Bottom Line

Put the pieces together and this is one of the more interesting HVC releases of 2026. A brand that has never made a lancero finally makes one. It uses an established blend with real history behind it, in a shape that changes how that tobacco reaches you. And there are only 5,000 of them. We're not going to oversell how it smokes, because we haven't lit one yet. But on format, history, and scarcity alone, the HVC 500 Years Lancero earns a spot on the watch list. Keep an eye on it alongside our other limited-edition cigars.

HVC's first lancero. Only 5,000 made.
