Cigars 101 - The Universal Blend
18th Jul 2022
Hi, and welcome to another episode of Mondays with Mardo. I'm your host Gerard, and this week, we're going to talk about universal blends in cigars.
All right, so a universal blend cigar is pretty basic. Let's say you have a cigar that has a San Andreas Maduro rapper, the binders are corojo and the fillers consist of Nicaraguan ligeros and some visos. Now you can take that same exact cigar and all you have to do is switch out the rapper to an Ecuadorian Connecticut. Now, essentially you are using a universal blend; all you're doing is you're changing the wrapper on that cigar. You can even take out the Connecticut Ecuadorian wrapper on it and put a Havana wrapper on it and call it different cigar. It's basically done by a lot of manufacturers so they can cut cost on their tobacco use. So therefore it's always essentially a very basic platform that they use, so their cost is always on an even keel. All they got to do is switch out the wrapper and they have a very good cigar.
Now to create a universal blend, you do have to make sure that it does have a very good baseline. So therefore, when you do change the wrapper, the flavor does not get very, very volatile so therefore it becomes a whole entire different cigar and that basically is a universal blend. I don't think it's truly boutique. I only don't think it's a very craft of the art, but it is what it is. A lot of people do it because they want to cut cost, and it's kind of like a cheat sheet or it's a cheesy way of doing things. Anyways, I'm not being very professional right now, but that's basically all I have to say for it, that's it.
Anyways, let me know in the comments, what you think of universal blends. Other than that, I'll see you guys next week. Thanks for tuning in, and remember, I'm your host, Gerard.
