Cigars 101 - The Art of the Blend
14th Mar 2022
Hi, and welcome to another episode of Mondays with Mardo's. This week, we are in Dominican Republic and we're going to talk about filler tobacco, and we're going to go the difference between Seco, Viso and Ligero. But before I get going, I need you to click on the subscribe button, click on the bell to be notified every single week of new episodes on Mondays with Mardo's.
All right. So when we talk about filler tobacco, fundamentally, we have three classifications. We have Seco, which is the thinnest leaf. We have Viso, which is in between, and then we have Ligero. So how are you going to be able to classify, how are you going to be able to identify these leaves, we're going to go through that right now.
All right. So on the table over here, we have a very basic idea of what I'm talking about. We have the Seco, we have the Viso, and then we have the Ligero. I know that you can see there's a little bit of color differentiation. However, that is not going to be a true identifier. What you have to do is you actually have to pick up the leaf and you have to have a feel for it and you got to look for the vein. You got to spread around a little bit, and you got to feel that this is pretty thin stuff, so therefore, this is going to be Seco.
Now, when it comes to the Viso, it's basically going to be me guessing myself. And what am I talking about? When I feel the Viso, it's going to feel thin, but I'm not going to be really sure if this is thick enough to be Ligero. So therefore, I'm going to be wondering, and that's what classifies as a Viso, it's right in between the thin and the thick. And then lastly, we're going to talk about Ligero. The key identifiers, it's very rough, the veins are a lot thicker than they would be on a Seco, so therefore, I'm going to know that this is going to be Ligero. Also sometimes, the color does give me some identification, but mainly again guys, it's going to be by feel.
And this takes a lot of experience. Anybody that's novice can have definitely a tough time being able to classify and sort it. But sorters do nothing but sorting, rollers do nothing but rolling and the packaging individuals do nothing but packaging. So this is a fundamental idea of the difference between fillers of Seco, Viso and Ligero. Hope you enjoyed the video. I'll see you guys next week back at home in California.
