Cigar Guide - Boutique or Not Boutique
4th Jul 2022
Hi, and welcome to another episode of Monday's with Mardo's. All right, so what is a boutique cigar and what does it consist of? So, first off, we're going to talk about what is my definition of a boutique cigar and what is the industry's boutique definition.
The industry's boutique definition is any manufacturer that has a production less than a million sticks is considered a boutique cigar. However, to me, it's a little bit more personal than that and I have a little bit of notes I'm going to share with you guys. To me, it's not about the production quantity that makes a cigar boutique, it's more about who is making this cigar. Is this a master blender that works for a very large company and is a corporate and I go in and just have them make me a cigar? So what the heck am I talking about? There's a big difference between a boutique brand and a true boutique cigar.
So if I were to, for instance, go to a very big cigar manufacturer and ask them to make me a cigar and I white label my product called Gerard Cigar, and I make it less than a million stick production wise, considered a boutique per the industry. To me personally, that is not known as a boutique cigar. It's called a boutique cigar brand and it's white label and those are the same exact tobaccos I'm using that that large cigar manufacturer uses for their cigars as well. But the blend is definitely different.
My definition of a boutique is when a individual or a company as a whole starts making their own cigars, sourcing their own tobaccos and their blends and creating something that the industry has never seen before because it is a brand new company from the grassroots aspect of it. And they're creating their own blends, meaning that they have to go and source and find their tobaccos on their own. They have to start learning how to create the blends. And there's going to be a lot of trials and tribulations with that. That's where you're going to find the passion of the true essence of what is cigar making blend is all about and making that company a truly boutique cigar.
So whether it's going to be good or not good, that is up to you to take that gamble. If it is a white label company, you can actually do some research and see who is making this cigar for them. And if you do like that large company on their own product that they're making, then it's a sure bet that you're going to like their cigars. But if it's something that you've never heard of, you definitely want to take a look into their blend, see how much marketing they're doing. And the reason why I say about the marketing, that's where you're going to be able to find out a little bit more about the brand, what kind of hints and flavors that cigar has to offer. So that is my definition of boutique or not to boutique or what is truly boutique or not. Other than that, I'm going to see you guys next week. I'm Gerard signing out. See ya.
